SpireWeather has been continuously monitoring the weather in Laverstock, a village close to Salisbury in Wiltshire, UK, since July 2009.  The data is recorded using a Davis Vantage Vue wireless weather station connected to a 5W  fit-PC computer that running 24/7 uses less than £10 of electricity a year.  The data is converted to the images you see on this web site by Weather Display software.

I have been interested in meteorology since childhood and set up SpireWeather for my own personal interest, to record and monitor local daily weather and weather extremes, particularly from my mobile. I must stress that this is a hobby site - whilst the data is accurate most of the time, there can be faults within the system and whilst I have tried to position the sensors as closely as possible to meteorological standards, practicality and the geography of the locality can affect the results.

For example, the station is very close to Burroughs Hill in Laverstock which results in a SW-NE bias in the wind direction For practical reasons the wind instruments are not as high as they should be and wind speeds can be lower than forecast.  Daytime winter temperatures close to Burroughs Hill can be lower than they are in the surrounding area, particularly in frosty conditions, and the proximity of buildings can result in higher than average temperatures on hot summer afternoons and evenings.  Cold-air drainage from the nearby Laverstock Downs can also result in particularly cold winter nights compared to the surrounding area.
